Brand YOU: The Dominatrix vs. The Librarian

By: Rochelle Moulton

Passion. We all want some, right?

When it comes to Brand YOU, the prevailing wisdom seems to be that bigger is better. That the grand and glorious passion always beats the long-simmering, just-about-to-boil variety.

Think again.

True passion seeps from your soul. It can surprise you with its intensity, but it can also be a quiet companion. Sometimes the stiletto-clad dominatrix, other times the quiet librarian with a twinkle in her eye.

Both passions matter. Both passions can attract an audience big enough to make your most outrageous dreams come true. As long as they are authentic. Grounded in you and what makes your heart beat faster.

I once worked with a quiet, meek even, accountant. Let’s call him Lester. He labored daily in an isolated cubicle, friendly enough, but a true introvert. His spent his days filling out arcanely detailed government forms for big corporations.

One day, knowing I was frantically trying to fill a last minute cancellation, Lester volunteered to talk about his specialty. He would stand before a group of 100 people and give a ten-minute chat on what they needed to know to pitch his work to their clients. Given my desperate state, I accepted, spent a half-hour prepping him, and steeled myself for the worst.

When I announced Lester as the next speaker, I saw the eye-rolling. Who wants to listen to a geeky introvert—even a sweet one—on a deeply technical subject?

As Lester stepped up to the front of the room, he paused. Three beats, six beats. The room was deathly quiet. Finally, slowly, he began to speak, each word measured, thoughtful. His voice deepened and his face became animated. His arms took on a life of their own. In about 30 seconds, he transformed from reserved accountant into colorful, mesmerizing teacher.

Lester lived like a rock-star in the office (the audience he most needed to bring him more of the work he loved) for the next week and never slid back into obscurity.

For every Kim Kardashian, there are hundreds of Lesters, quietly, consistently, working at their passion for an audience that matters deeply to them. Lesters simmering quietly, searching for their version of the limelight.

True, sustainable passion comes in many forms. Your life’s work is to build yours and treat it with respect. To grow it with care and attention and integrity. To search out the right opportunities—and sometimes to simply accept the ones that come your way.

You may need to overcome some fears—public speaking anyone?—to give full force to your vision and build an audience of true believers. But if you start today, you’ll be one day closer to living your dream.

So what’s YOUR Brand gonna be—librarian or dominatrix? The world needs both.
