Watching award shows with friends is a fantastic yearly tradition. But if you’re hosting your own Oscars bash, be careful. Viewing three hours of film clips and speeches can be a yawner, unless you add a little pizazz. After years of hosting Oscars parties (some better than others), I’ve learned a lot of useful things about making the night fabulous. These are some of my favorite tips:
Make your guests feel like stars
To add a little glamour, give your party a formal spin. Don’t just watch the Oscars – feel like you’re there!
For example, sending out fancy invitations gives your event a celebrity edge. Plus, the official RSVP will help you prepare for the right amount of food and drink. And, before you worry about the cost, there are a ton of free templates you can use to create the perfect invitation with little expense. To enhance the fancy feel of your party, ask your guests to arrive in formal-wear. Ladies will love the excuse to dress up for the night, and even go a little crazy with their ball gowns (thrift stores are a great resource for unusual dresses). Complete the celebrity treatment by laying red fabric down the entryway of your house or apartment to create your own Red Carpet. Snap photos of your glamorous guests as they arrive, and you’ll have your very own Oscars photo gallery.
Add some competitive spirit
Watching each category is more exciting when your guests can win, too. Before the event, print out a list of the award categories and contenders. Have each guest fill out a sheet with their winner predictions, and when the night’s over, the guest with the most correct guesses wins a prize. To keep the competition alive throughout the night, maintain a scoreboard to tally correct guesses. Your guests will love the friendly competition.
Stick with the theme
In the end, the Oscars is all about our love for movies. Celebrate that theme throughout the night, even when it comes to the decorations and refreshments. For example, use the Best Picture nominees as inspiration for your decorating. Cut out pictures of the moon and planets to honor Gravity, or even serve some freeze-dried space ice cream. Your guests will have a good laugh if you pass out ‘70s-style costume mustaches as a nod to American Hustle. Of course, a cardboard standup of Leonardo DiCaprio never hurts. The list of possibilities is endless! When it comes to serving drinks, be creative. This infographic provides lots of ideas for how to make sure you’re well-stocked, but feel free to use some Hollywood-inspired recipes like these.
Take advantage of the ads
When you’re watching the Oscars, don’t let the ads slow your party down. Mute the TV and do something fun. Blast songs from nominated film scores, or watch clips and trailers as a refresher for this year’s movies. Or, if you want to watch the ads, give this amusing game a try: take one of those American Hustle mustaches and stick it to a random spot on the TV screen. When it lines up with someone’s face, take a drink. If you’re partying with film buffs, consider using the ads for a little Oscar Trivia contest – all your guests will walk away with some cool movie facts.
These are just a few ways you can make your Oscars night awesome. It’s all about using your imagination and finding those unique spins to keep the night fun. In the end, remember what it’s all about – films, fun, and friends.
