Everyday women are portrayed in a cornucopia ways. Many are seen as mothers, students, and once in a great awhile, successful business women. For the most part, however, women are portrayed as sex symbols. Perfume ads reek of half naked women seducing half naked men. Clothing ads use models that are stick thin and Barbie-like. Celebrities are praised for their bikini bodies, this week’s sexual partner, and, let’s not forget, the occasional sex tape.
Not only are sex tapes and sexual escapades widely publicized, but “sexting” has also become a huge problem. Young girls and women alike have succumbed to using their bodies to either get what they want or attempt to impress somebody with nudity and other explicit material. The problem with this approach is they are selling themselves short, literally. Men no longer have to “date” a woman to get into bed with her. All they have to do is send a simple text: “What are you wearing right now?” This in and of itself makes sex a commodity; something that can be exchanged on phones, Skype, or over e-mail.
Rather than sleeping around during their twenties women should focus on growing as individuals. This can be achieved through staying fit, doing group activities with friends, traveling, and, most importantly, focusing on her finances and career. Success is largely based on personal happiness and from enjoying what she does with her life. Finding the perfect career is not always the easiest task, but once a woman finds her place at the right job it can do wonders for her confidence; far more than sending any sexual “selfie” to an eager recipient.
Recently, a new PR firm aimed at empowering and encouraging women, has launched a new campaign called “Make a #SuccessTape.” The Girl Power Agency, founded by Kelly Smith Beaty, is asking that women use this campaign to make videos of themselves at their jobs and discuss how their career choice has helped them to achieve success. “I know how important messages are, particularly to young girls, which is why The Girl Power Agency is dedicated to propagating images of women that are empowering, or at minimum, well-balanced” says Beaty. Risky and dangerous sexual behavior gives younger audiences the wrong impression of what it means to be a strong woman. This campaign is a great way for women to express themselves in a constructive manner. Women are strong, beautiful, and special creatures. They have the power to change the world. When they become slaves to their own sexuality though, they give up this power. The power to be independent and successful comes from within. Not from the way their body looks or how they can please a sexual partner. Overt sexual behavior, such as “sexting” or making sex tapes, is very damaging and at the end of the day is all a lie. Real intimacy comes when a woman feels totally comfortable with a person and being herself in their presence. Being intimate is all about vulnerability. By putting naked images of her body on the computer or on someone else’s phone a woman is vulnerable in the worst possible way. Once something leaves her possession, she cannot ever fully get it back.
Now is the time in any woman’s life to focus on her goals, how she wants to achieve personal and professional success, and most importantly how she can use her talents for bettering the world, not just points in the bedroom.
