No one likes getting sick. And, no one likes getting sick during the holidays, especially with a sore throat. It is torture sitting at the dining table looking at all of the delicious home cooked food, and you can’t swallow. We’ve all been there, and it sucks. Here are some solutions to either soothe your sore throat or completely eliminate it.
Spray It Up!
The best type of throat sprays to numb your throat are ones that contain Sage and Echinacea extracts. The sage extract contains ursolic acid, which has been found to act as an anti-inflammatory agent. The Echinacea extract acts an immune boosting agent. The combination of both extracts not only lessens sore throat symptoms within three days, but also measures up to over the counter anesthetic sprays.
Breath in the Moisture
The most common culprit for a sore throat is dry air. For those who sleep with their mouth open, you know what I’m talking about. When the air is dry, it can lessen the protective mucus in your throat, which will cause irritation. A simple way to add moisture is to invest in a humidifier. The cool thing is that the humidifier will not only battle your sore throat symptoms, but raise the possibility of eliminating other viruses.
Be a Sucker
No, not literally. Go to your local drug store and pick up a bag of lozenges. A lozenge typically contains ingredients classified as demulcents. These ingredients help with easing the pain of a sore throat, especially when it comes to swallowing. An example of a demulcent is honey. Also, look at menthol lozenges which will also help with numbing of the tissue in the throat.
Gargle with Candy
Are you a licorice fan? If so, you’re going to love this one. Since day one, you may have been advised to gargle with salt water when you get a sore throat. A better solution is gargling with some type of licorice extract. Licorice actually has both anti-inflammatory and healing properties. If gargling really isn’t your thing, you can always sip on tea that contains a licorice extract as well.
As a matter of fact, sleep is the best way to kick any oncoming sickness. The reason people get sick is because their immune system has been compromised. The best way to rebuild your immune system is to get as much rest as possible. Although it may not be the quickest solution, getting enough rest will give your body time to fight off the virus.
Hope You’re Not a Vampire
Or kissing someone special this holiday season! Go ahead and suck on one fresh clove of garlic, sliced in half. Place a half in your right cheek and the other half in your left cheek. Then, proceed to suck on the garlic halves like a cough drop. After sucking on the halves for a little bit, slightly bite down on the clove to release the allicin, a compound that can help kill bacteria that causes strep. Allicin can also help fight off other germs and throat irritation.
