Every female needs a few closet essentials to help pull together any look AND add some quick style to any last minute outfit. When building a wardrobe that will get you through any situation, you need a few staple items first. So, grab a pen and paper, write down the key items from the list located below, and get to shopping!
Little Black Dress
One of the most important items in a woman’s closet is the perfect “Little Black Dress.” This is the dress you can grab, slip into, and you feel like a million bucks. When searching for this dress, you can aim for a cocktail dress or for more of a semi-professional dress. It wouldn’t hurt to get one for each occasion! A great example of a black cocktail dress would be the Calvin Klein Sheath Dress. For a semi-professional dress, take a look at the Elie Tahari Black Dress.
You can never go wrong with a having a suit at your finger tips. Even if you only wear one occasionally, investing in one when you aren’t in a rush to get one will allow you to find that perfect, well-fit suit. Hopefully, a suit that will last you for quite some time. Take a look at the Tahari ASL Stand-Collar Pantsuit as a great reference point.
I cannot stress enough how important have a nice pair of blank pants is. From last minute dates to surprise work events, my black pants have saved me in several (potentially embarrassing) situations! Depending on the top you pair it with, black pants can look professional, casual, semi-professional, and almost any other style you can think of. They are very versatile and always ready to get you out of any fashion bind. Check out Banana Republic’s Black Pants for some ideas.
Enough Said. A pair of dark jeans will never steer you wrong.
I know, white is a magnet to all things imaginable. However, a white t-shirt eliminates the possibility that the shirt won’t match with something. So, on those weeks that you let laundry build up, that white t-shirt will be your life saver. Wear it on its own, or pair it with a scarf, either way, any of us can rock the look.
A cardigan is the perfect weight to stow away in your purse, light enough to throw on when a room is chilly, and adds a special touch to any outfit. When I purchase cardigans, I tend to go for the color black because the color is the most versatile when throwing it over any outfit.
I think we’ve all stuffed our feet into black heels that absolutely kill us within five minutes of wearing them. One way to fix this is to really spend a bit of time searching for the RIGHT pair of shoes. While shopping, try on as many pairs of shoes as you can. And, don’t just stand in a mirror and look at them, take them for a test drive! Walk on both carpet and tile, stand on your tip toes, move around and dance if you’re brave enough! If you feel your feet jamming into the front of the pump, your heel keeps popping out of the back, or you are wobbling in them, they are a negative. Also pay attention to the cushion in the bottom and any squeeze points. Since these will be your go-to shoes, and they are essential to a complete wardrobe, make sure you are comfortable.
On those days when you feel lazy and don’t feel like putting too much effort into your outfit, ballet flats will be your hero shoe. They are easy to slip on and work with just about any outfit. Don’t forget that they put that extra cute flair without spending hours of primping. The Tory Burch Reva Ballet Flats are a perfect ballet flat!
It never hurts to have a chic scarf on hand; no matter where you live. If you live some place where it tends to be warmer, invest in a lighter weight scarf as opposed to a heavy wool scarf. By throwing a scarf on over a v-neck with a pair of jeans, you have created an easy outing outfit without much effort.
Every female has some type of bag that they carry all of their essentials in, whether it is a backpack, purse, or plastic bag. The key to investing in a bag, or purse, for your wardrobe is to choose one that fits with most of your outfits. So, aim for a more neutral color. Also, you want to look for a purse that you would not embarrass you in an interview or in a professional environment. Check out the Fossel Preston Crossbody bag.
The perfect little bag to bring out on those special nights without having to bring a huge purse. Just make sure that it fits the essential items like your IDs, credit cards, phone, keys, and touch-up makeup items.
