When I was asked to write a piece on inspirational women in the media in honor of International Women’s Day, one woman immediately sprang to mind, Arianna Huffington. Aside from the obvious online media empire Arianna Huffington has skillfully built worldwide, The Huffington Post. She is a renowned author and accomplished businesswoman. One of the many things that set her apart is her unique leadership style and perspective. In her 14th book, Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder, she focuses on work/life balance, the importance of health and basic needs…like sleep! Arianna reminded us that we don’t have to be sub-human to be a success and, more importantly, we embraced her viewpoint rather than condemning her (as evidenced by the book’s debut at #1 on The New York Times’ Best Sellers List).
Many, myself included, already recognize how Arianna has completely changed the media forever, but I firmly believe, someday, we will look back and realize that her work was pivotal in changing the way we both view and report the news.
We are living in a time of such immense change, we likely don’t even stop to recognize how influential women like Arianna Huffington have been on our daily lives. I am proud to be a part of such an exciting time and to have role models like Ms. Huffington leading the way. Beyond her remarkable accomplishments, innovative changes to the industry and impeccable style, her recognition of our need to redefine success and take inventory of our lives puts her light years ahead of the rest!

One of the most inspiring women I see in the media today is Shonda Rhimes. She is noted writer, director, and producer of some of today’s most popular TV shows; such as, Grey’s Anatomy, Princess Dairies 2: Royal Engagement, and Scandal. Shonda is a writer and producer on all of these shows on top of being a single mom of three through adoption and surrogacy. Along with her career and personal success, the leads on all of Shonda’s shows are also inspiring women. From Meredith Grey, to the most recent Annalise Keating, these women, and their creator, show resilient and powerful women can be.

My inspiration is my mother. She is honestly the strongest person I know. Growing up she would always support my younger sister, Lina, and I 110% with whatever goals we wanted to accomplish. As a nurse, she built herself up in that field while also earning her MBA on top of her regular job and taking care of her two girls. My mother is incredibly knowledgeable and shares her intellect with us. The potential she sees in Lina and I is breathtaking, and she wants the world for us. She has educated us in the finer things in life, food, music, and family. The world that she built for Lina and I is one where we know that we can make anything happen, and where we know to work hard but to also treat one’s self. I hope I can become a quarter of the woman my mother is.
As one can read SheNOW has some amazing role models!
