Though it seems absurd to entertain this debate so far after the fact, it would inevitably come up with the re-emergence of Hillary Clinton in the political arena. I was asked to give my opinion on Hillary, being the strong woman she is, “standing by her (philandering) man” all these years.
Allow me to preface this by saying people stay together for all sorts of reasons. I suppose the only people those reasons need to make sense to are the ones involved. Having said that, I think Hillary had her reasons for staying with Bill…one of which is to become President of the United States.
Please do not misunderstand me, I am not suggesting that Hillary Clinton has not earned the position on her own merits. I believe she has the credentials, the experience and the ability to get the job done. I also believe they collectively got him into office and she is expecting him to return the favor. This country is struggling with the concept of a female president…the idea of a single, divorced, female president is clearly beyond the grasp of our fine nation.
I would not be at all surprised if, after being elected to a second term, Mrs. Clinton decided to leave Bill should he have any further indiscretions. At that point, she will no longer be in need of a “first husband” for public approval. After all, she would be serving her second term as President of the United States and there would also be a certain expectation of power in her home. A cheating husband could make the most powerful woman in the world appear weak.
In short, I think it is bizarre to rehash this subject but I also believe it to be relevant. It is a topic that plays a role in her candidacy because Bill Clinton would essentially be the, “first husband”. He is revered in the political community and has ongoing connections and relationships with political leaders. He is highly respected as a world leader and could assume that role seamlessly. Additionally, it becomes pertinent when we consider Hillary Clinton as a leader in her own right because Bill’s personality can be overshadowing and his past undermining of her authority. She has worked hard to establish herself firmly so that will not be an issue but only time will tell. Fortunately, Hillary is a very strong woman with extremely firm political aspirations, and I really don’t think she will let anything get in her way!
