Principal For a Day!
By: Netreia McNulty
On October 11, 2016, I had the privilege of representing SheNOW Women’s Charity Board for this year’s Dallas-ISD Principal For A Day. Each year numerous community leaders, corporate partners and educators join forces with local principals to get an up close & real look at the day in the life of school administrators.
By a stroke of luck and great timing, I was placed at Sidney Lanier Elementary School/Vanguard for the Arts in West Dallas. Ms. Alyssa Peraza, a veteran educator and fellow Dallas-ISD graduate, is the current principal at Lanier Elementary. From my arrival to the last school bell, Ms. Peraza and I were on the move. We did spot observations in the several traditional classrooms, which allowed me the opportunity to see how different teachers manage their classrooms, craft their lessons, and engage their students. The teaching staff of Lanier Elementary seemed to be in touch with the different needs of their students. During my time on campus, I was also able to briefly visit to the music appreciation, dance and theater arts vanguard classes. Admittedly, I was quite jealous. These students are studying the arts in elementary school. What an experience!
I greatly enjoyed my PFAD adventure this year with Ms. Peraza. Under her leadership, with an amazing cast of teachers and support staff, Sidney Lanier Elementary is a thriving jewel in the West Dallas community.
